Meeting Legislation

Ecodan®, the award-winning air source heat pump system, provides domestic and commercial heating and hot water, cutting annual fuel bills and CO2 emissions. Ecodan harvests renewable energy from the outdoor air and upgrades it to provide heating and hot water for homes.

Clearly A++ More Efficient Heating Solution

The Ecodan range has been given an A++ rating under the new Energy Related Products (ErP) directive. ErP means that all space and water heaters will need to display an energy label, which will help both residential and commercial customers identify the most energy-efficient products on the market and brings heating products into line with other energy consuming goods, such as fridges and washing machines.

These labels will show the efficiency ranging from the most efficient A++ to the least efficient G and will be clearly marked with coloured bars; from green (the most efficient) all the way down to red (least efficient). The details on the label will identify the efficiency band for heating and where relevant, hot water production, and if applicable, noise, emissions and power consumption. For heat pumps, they will also indicate the three different climate zones within Europe, which is important because the UK is split between all three of these zones.

Meeting Mass Market Needs

The fifth generation of Ecodan includes a completely new range of cylinders using a completely new way of heating the water in domestic situations, with a plate heat exchanger and patented Scale-Stop technology to eliminate the effect of limescale. All the developments have focused on improving hot water recovery efficiency and time, and ease of installation and use.

The new Ultra Quiet Ecodan unit has been designed to satisfy domestic premises permitted development standards (MCS020), and the market leading low noise levels virtually eliminate the need for planning permission and maximises installation options.

Mitsubishi Electric has also introduced remote energy monitoring on every Ecodan that leaves the factory, with the company believing that this is key to demonstrating the effectiveness of heat pumps and helping homeowners qualify for incentive payments.

The range offers three different options for homeowners:

Standard Level which is pre-installed at the factory, offering remote energy monitoring using partial estimation of energy use;

Level Two which includes the addition of an electric meter;

Level Three which adds a Metering and Monitoring Service Package (MMSP) heat meter, enabling homeowners to receive an additional RHI payment of £230 per year for seven years.

Achieving High Efficiency in New-Builds

The domestic Ecodan range now includes a new 4kW unit designed specifically to meet the demands of modern homebuilding techniques.

The unique design of the Ecodan QUHZ air source heat pump delivers efficient hot water, whilst still providing renewable heating to answer the high hot water, low heating requirement of highly insulated homes.

Commercial Heating

Designed specifically for use in commercial properties, our larger renewable air source and ground source Ecodan products (CAHV and CRHV) use proven heat pump technology to deliver effective, low carbon heating, providing a simple solution that can replace traditional systems.

Heating accounts for more than half of the total energy consumed by an average commercial property, so this is the obvious area to target to make the required difference.

The products are now proving themselves in schools, offices, factories, showrooms, agriculture and in almost any situation calling for reliable, renewable heating. Ecodan is not only providing the heating for the Rhino Pool at Edinburgh Zoo, it is also being used to deliver community heating to the multi award-winning Kingston Heights project, which sees 132 apartments and a 142-bedroom hotel get their renewable heating from the River Thames.

Ecodan units can work on their own or together in a highly efficient cascade system that modulates how many units operate to match capacity required. Systems can also work in conjunction with existing heating systems in a Hybrid solution which chooses which form of heating to use to deliver the best efficiency on any given day.

Ecodan Heat Pumps

Unlike many other air source heat pumps, Ecodan’s advanced inverter controls regulate the energy consumption to ensure that Ecodan only consumes the exact energy needed at any given time to give a constant supply of hot water and heating.

This also makes Ecodan super quiet – reflected in the fact that it has received the official backing of the Noise Abatement Society which has awarded a ‘Quiet Mark’ of approval to the domestic heating product.

Accredited under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) Ecodan offers buildings a viable, low carbon alternative to gas and oil heating that will also reduce running costs.

Specifically designed for the UK, Ecodan is as ‘plug and play’ as possible, with quiet, inverter control to regulate energy consumption.
