Kingspan Insulation Ltd
Ductwork Insulation Koolduct

Kingspan Insulation, market leader in the manufacture of rigid urethane and rigid phenolic insulation products, offers engineers, designers and contractors premium and high performance insulation solutions for ductwork in Building Services / HVAC applications for both new and refurbishment projects.

The Kingspan KoolDuct® System

The System is an advanced and innovative pre-insulated ductwork system available in up to 3 m long ductwork sections, fabricated from CFC / HCFC-free rigid phenolic insulation panels with aluminium surfaces available in silver or black.

It is particularly suitable for high specification projects that require durable materials to perform in moisture and hygiene controlled environments.

Lightweight

Weighing up to 85% less than galvanised sheet metal ductwork, the system can overcome severe constraints on structural loadings and is ideal for refurbishment projects in older buildings which cannot support the additional weight of insulated sheet metal ductwork.

Speed

It has a single fix installation as the lagging operation is eliminated, thus reducing site time and contractor management. The availability of Kingspan KoolDuct in 3 m long sections vs. 1.2 / 1.5 m for sheet metal also means fewer sections and less handling, resulting in fast track installation – up to three times faster.

Space

The pre-insulated system can be installed flush to the ceiling, as it does not require lagging and can save up to 150-200 mm of space above a false ceiling. The low thermal conductivity (0.021 W/m·K) of the rigid phenolic insulation panels, allows specified thermal performance standards to be achieved with a minimal thickness of insulation.

Installed Cost

Independent research by Bucknall Austin in April 2007, revealed that the installed cost of the system can be up to 19% cheaper compared to the installed cost of insulated sheet metal ductwork.

Air Leakage, Energy & Running Cost

The air leakage rate of the system is a fraction of that of insulated sheet metal ductwork and can easily meet the requirements of HVAC DW 144 – Class C (high pressure).

When combined with the low thermal conductivity (0.021 W/m·K) and superior insulating qualities of the rigid phenolic insulation panels, the system can yield significant electrical consumption savings due to reduced heating and cooling loads.

Independent research investigating the estimated effect on fan power of different ductwork air leakage rates, showed that the use of the Kingspan KoolDuct System can save over 30% on the annual electricity cost of running a fan.

Air Quality

The airstream flowing through the ductwork flows over sealed aluminium surfaces, reducing the risk of loose fibres entering the air handling system. As a result the system is often specified in food processing, pharmaceutical, and medical and other clean air environments.

Versatility

The system can be installed internally, externally with additional weatherproofing e.g. rooftop installations, concealed above a false ceiling, or visibly mounted. It can be installed in very high ambient temperature and relative humidity ambient operating conditions.

Installation & Fabrication

The Kingspan KoolDuct System is fabricated and installed by specially trained fabricators and installers who have completed a comprehensive training program, and who have been granted ‘authorised contractor’ status by Kingspan Insulation. Competencies are continually monitored and controlled with ‘authorised contractor’ status reviewed on an annual basis.

Applications

The Kingspan KoolDuct System is specified for use in residential, commercial and industrial applications:

  • New build & refurbished domestic living accommodation
  • Food & beverage & pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Hospitals & health facilities where hygiene is high priority & non-mineral fibre insulation products are preferred
  • Education & leisure facilities e.g, swimming pools

Product Data

Kingspan KoolDuct rigid phenolic insulation panels feature:

  • A thermal conductivity of 0.021 W/m·K at 10°C mean, the lowest of any commonly available insulation material
  • Fire & smoke performance with a Class 0 / Low Risk fire classification to the Building Regulations / Standards
  • < 5% smoke obscuration when tested to BS 5111-1: 1974
  • > 90% closed cell structure making it non-wicking & highly resistant to moisture penetration
  • Satisfy requirements of the TIMSA Guide, BS 5422: 2001, NHS CO2, NES Specification Expert Y50 and DEO Specification 037
  • Are manufactured under a quality control system approved to BS EN ISO 9001: 2000

The Kingspan Kooltherm® Duct Insulation System

For projects or situations where traditional insulated sheet metal ductwork must be used, Kingspan Insulation can offer the Kingspan Kooltherm Duct Insulation System as an alternative thin solution that provides some of the benefits of the pre-insulated system, but not all.
