Water-Source Air Conditioning Systems (WRF)
Colt International Ltd designs and manufactures water source heat pump
systems. These are designed to provide minimal environmental impact, as
well as to meet the requirements of the F-Gas Regulations.
Caloris water and refrigerant flow (WRF) is a technology that provides
an
ideal alternative to both conventional air conditioning and reverse
cycle heat
pump systems. It provides the advantages of efficiency, safety and
flexibility
that are provided by water-based climate control.
Water-Source Heat Pump Systems
Caloris WRF systems are based on a decentralised, locally controlled
arrangement of quiet, slim, indoor heat pump units. Simple to install,
economical to run, and low in noise output, these systems are especially
suitable for use in offices, sports and leisure facilities, residential
buildings,
retail buildings, hotels and schools.
Control Systems
Caloris WRF systems employ a decentralised control system, which
enables the close and individual control of the internal space. Controls
are
available in either analogue or digital versions, and these may be
connected
to a building management system.
Operation
Caloris WRF systems can comprise three main components: Indoor heat
pump units for each controlled area; an external energy source (e.g. a
central air to water heat pump or ground source etc); and a neutral
water
loop, which provides the means of distributing energy between the
water-based heat pumps.
Caloris systems can use both the building mass or a water reservoir
(when
connected to a ground source heat pump) as a heat sink for both heating
and cooling purposes, and this provides additional efficiency. The
systems
are so designed that if one of the indoor units in a series should fail,
the
rest continue to operate.
Composition & Manufacture
Caloris WRF indoor heat pump units are manufactured by Colt
International
in the UK. Every unit produced undergoes a complete functional test. New
routines have been developed in the company’s Havant factory with the
aim of achieving zero-defect production processes.
Dimensions
Horizontal indoor heat pumps measure 247mm in depth, or 339mm in depth
in the case of size 7 version. This makes them amongst the slimmest
available, and allows them to be installed within most ceiling voids.
Vertical
indoor heat pumps measure less than 500mm in height, which enables
them to be installed directly under windows.
Technical Data
Caloris WRF systems provide excellent performance. Depending on water
temperatures, indoor units have an energy efficiency rating (EER) of
3.7-6.4.
Outdoor units have CoP’s of between 3-5 and EER’s of 4-5 (= an SPF of
30-40).
Caloris WRF systems are also amongst the quietest available, with indoor
units producing a noise output of NR28-NR38. All Caloris WRF indoor
units
contain less than 3kg of HFC refrigerant and as a result are unaffected
by
the F-Gas Regulations.
Installation
Indoor Heat pump units are connected by a two-pipe water loop. Cross
linked polyethylene pipework reduces installation time and costs. There
is
no limit to the lengths of pipe-work because, as a water-based
technology,
Caloris WRF systems do not have to pump refrigerants around a building.
Technical Support
Colt provides a comprehensive support service, including system design,
manufacture, project management, installation, commissioning and
maintenance.
