Reading University Perforated Face Diffusers c/w Integral Swirl Diffuser - Case Study

Special Perforated Diffusers Help Create Right Climate for Life Science at University of Reading

The brand new £23 million Life Sciences Building at the University of Reading has really put Ruskin Air Management service under the microscope.

There's no finer recent example of Ruskin’s ability to custom tailor an Air Diffusion air distribution solution that matches both aesthetic and engineering requirements.

Ruskin Air Management technical and manufacturing teams developed a special Air Diffusion perforated face diffuser, which integrates with the 1200 by 300mm ceiling grid, while also creating a distinctive shadow line effect.

The University of Reading has one of the country's largest Schools of Biological Sciences and the new Life Sciences Building is the latest jewel in the campus crown.

It will offer state-of-the-art facilities for pharmacy and biomedical teaching and research and also serve to foster links with the University's Schools of Food Biosciences and Chemistry.

Air conditioning

The three storey building houses a range of laboratories, lecture and seminar rooms and staff offices.

Air conditioning is provided throughout by means of a VAV system served by packaged chiller and air handling units located in a roof top plant room. Filtered and conditioned air is delivered to the various areas via Air Diffusion Perforated Face Diffusers located in the ceiling.

Over 100 of these units were supplied to the project - each featuring a “tegular” (or tile-like) frame to match the recessed ceiling system.

The diffusers are located by means of a specially adapted flanging system within a plenum in the ceiling void on each floor. Diffusers set up for two, three or four-way horizontal air distribution are provided according to the location and the air volume required.

Incorporated in the design of the Diffuser is a hinged inner core with a perforated outer face secured with a retention cord. The diffusers can thus be swung down from the ceiling. However, if required, the inner core is removable to permit full easy access for installation and maintenance.

An integral Swirl Diffuser fixed to the rear of the inner core gives a 2-way air supply pattern. Diffusers destined for extract duties have no Swirl fitted. The air conditioning system serving the Life Sciences Building was designed by Zisman Bowyer and Partners. Mechanical and electrical contractors for the project are Haden Young.
