Protan (UK) Limited is the UK subsidiary of Protan
AS, a multi-national family owned Company established in 1939 and based
in Norway. Protan also operates in Denmark, Finland, Poland and Sweden
with associates in many other European countries.
Protan AS has manufactured waterproofing materials
for over 60 years and roofing membranes since 1971; the first roofing
membrane was installed in 1971 and is still performing satisfactorily.
Millions of square metres have now been laid, waterproofing roofs with
reliability and durability over a broad range of roof shapes and
designs.
Protan is Scandinavia's largest producer of thermoplastic roofing
membranes and is at the forefront of membrane technology.
Protan production processes are strictly controlled
to maintain quality. Protan AS is committed to recycling and energy
control and is registered to ISO 9001: Quality System Certification and
ISO 14001: Environmental Certification.
Protan is an environmentally concerned manufacturer
of plastic-coated textiles; our environmental policy promotes products
and attitudes, which contribute to reducing the overall consumption of
natural resources.
Protan membranes are accredited by the British Board
of Agrément and tested by the Building Research Establishment and Loss
Prevention Council; Protan production processes are strictly controlled
to maintain quality.
Protan membranes and systems are proven to be durable
under the extreme conditions of the Scandinavian climate where
temperatures can range from -40°C during winter months, to +40°C during
the summer. The region experiences harsh weather conditions and storm
force winds far more severe than in the UK.
Protan roofing systems are compatible with most
structural schemes. They are lightweight, thermally efficient and
provide visual qualities of colour and texture that are sympathetic with
most building types. Protan materials are cost effective and reliable
solutions to construction requirements.
The company specialises in the fabrication of a range
of Protan synthetic canvasses used for a variety of applications,
including tented structures, ducting and containment vessels.
Environment - Green Roofs
Protan aims are the continuous development of
production methods and products, which produce a minimum of
environmentally harmful waste, increase recycling, and reduce waste.
Protan’s policy ensures focus and commitment on sustainable development
in our marketing and training for our staff in environmental issues.
Protan AS has systematically made efforts to improve their environmental
performance. Programmes for reduction of the use of raw material and
other natural resources, reduction of waste and pollution and other
significant negative impacts on the local and global environment, have
been approved.
Their environmental policy is underpinned by ISO
14001, an Environmental Management System, which covers all operations
in Protan AS, Norway, where Protan membranes are manufactured. The
policy covers product development, marketing and sales, purchase,
production, distribution, installation, service and recycling. The
system was certified by Det Norske Veritas in December 1997.
The environmental aspects that have a significant impact on the
environment have been dealt with either by reduction projects in our
improvement programmes or within new procedures in our Quality Assurance
System and Environmental Management System.
Protan and Recycling - Green Roofing Systems
Protan AS, as a member of ESWA (European Single Ply
Waterproofing Association), signed a voluntary commitment for recycling
of roofing membranes. The commitment is to recycle at least 50% of the
collectable, available quantity of roofing membrane.
Recycled materials are processed and prepared as raw materials for new
membranes.
In the future organic materials will not be allowed to be sent to land
fill (EU-directive). It is expected that 40% of the roofing membranes
will be used for energy production.
