Note that throughout this section the term ‘separator’
is used instead of the term ’interceptor’. The terms have the same meaning.
Surface water drains normally discharge to a watercourse or indirectly into underground
waters (groundwater) via a soakaway. Contamination of surface water by oil, chemicals
or suspended solids can cause these discharges to have a serious impact on the
receiving water.
Oil separators are installed on surface water drainage systems
to protect receiving waters from pollution by oil, which may be present due to
minor leaks from vehicles and plant, from accidental spillage or due to deliberate
and illegal tipping into drains.

Sewage treatment
plant operate by providing an environment in which aerobic bacteria are cultured.
These bacteria survive by using biological matter in the sewage as a food source.
To provide optimum treatment the bacteria need free access to oxygen and immersion
in the sewage effluent. The majority of package plant work by providing a fixed
medium that the bacteria adhere to, and a means of interfacing this with regular
supplies of oxygen and biological material. Properly designed and maintained they
can remove up to 95% of the biological pollutants present in sewage.

On the other
hand, the traditional septic tank process relies on sewage solids being settled
in the tank and anaerobic bacteria culturing in the settled sludge providing a
degree of treatment. Further treatment is carried out in biological treatment
fields with the settled effluent being exposed to naturally occurring bacteria
in the subsoil. However the use of modern domestic chemicals has largely eliminated
any bacteriological activity in septic tanks or irrigation fields and today they
only provide primary settlement of sewage with little if any improvement in effluent
quality.
Stricter guidelines on the design of irrigation fields will mean
that even fewer successful septic tank installations are likely in the future.
Holding Tanks

locations without mains drainage, where the discharge of treated effluent is not
permissible due to unsuitable ground conditions, or where infrequent or seasonal
use, such as a holiday home, would prevent the successful functioning of a Biotec
packaged treatment plant, for example.

A reed bed
is a natural filtration process used in conjunction with a Biotec Treatment Plant
to further enhance the quality of effluent migrating into surrounding watercourse.
A reed bed is only required when local water authorities request a better quality
