KNX UK
A Fast Growing Association
The KNX UK Association represents UK manufacturers,
integrators and training establishments along with other interested
parties to promote the KNX standard. KNX UK also promotes associated KNX
products and services. This fast growing association is part of a
worldwide network of national KNX Associations that reside under the KNX
International Association based in Brussels. In the UK
numbers of KNX installations are growing rapidly as more and more
engineers realise the benefits. The demand for Smart Home technology is
as strong as ever, whilst in the commercial market, KNX features within
many new and refurbished landmark buildings from Heathrow T5 to The
British Library.
International Standard
KNX (formerly known as EIB) is an international
building control standard that is used to put the intelligence into
intelligent buildings. The technology can be applied to domestic
lifestyle smart home automation projects, to any commercial new build
and refurbishment project as well as for specialised installations.
The standard has been eagerly adopted by international world leading
manufacturers who provide a vast array of KNX-certified products. KNX
enables the integration and programming of these products using a single
software tool. KNX products are all thoroughly tested for compliance,
ensuring they operate seamlessly together on a single, simple network.
Choosing from this pool of interoperable technology, a system can be
designed and built using off-the-shelf components that ‘speak the same
language’ and can operate across the same network, resulting in much
less cabling and higher functionality. KNX is the only
global standard for home and building control with:
-
A single, manufacturer independent design &
commissioning tool (ETS)
-
A complete set of supported communication media (TP,
PL, RF & IP)
-
A complete set of supported configuration modes
(system, easy & automatic mode)
KNX is approved as:
-
European Standard (CENELEC EN 50090 & CEN EN
13321-1)
-
International Standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3)
-
Chinese Standard (GB/Z 20965)
Integrated Energy-Savings
With the “Green” agenda very much to the fore, it is
important that building control systems are specified that can make a
major contribution to energy savings. KNX can be used not only to
implement simple lighting control procedures but also to achieve fully
integrated energy saving solutions. Building owners can use KNX across a
wide range of building services:
KNX bus cable can be run across Radio Bus (wireless)
Ethernet (structured cabling) Fibre Optic and occasionally power line.
Gateways to other control protocols, such as DALI (Digital Addressable
Lighting Intelligence) have also been developed. These expand the
capability of KNX control systems to provide the complete solution for a
building. KNX Is Flexible & Is The Future
Over time, needs change within a building’s
environment and a flexible building control solution that allows changes
to be made with minimal disruption is essential. With KNX, problems of
the past such as disruption, rewiring, wastage or added hardware are no
longer a concern - with KNX a system can be simply reprogrammed with a
laptop. KNX association promotes Universal Bus,
Intelligent Controls, DALI Lighting Control Systems, Radio Bus, Ethernet
and Home Automation products.
