I²t Energy Let Through
The energy let through by a breaker determines the minimum size of
the downstream cable.
Current limiting circuit breakers let through less energy, therefore the
cable sizes are not an indication of continuous current ratings.


Discrimination
Discrimination is the coordination of circuit breakers such that when
a fault occurs in a network it is cleared by the breaker immediately
upstream of the fault. No breaker further upstream operates. Thus the
number of circuits affected by the fault is minimised. In many cases
full discrimination is achieved up to the breaking capacity of the
breaker disconnecting the fault. This is indicated by iyFlc in the table
below. In other cases discrimination is achieved up to a lesser current
as indicated below in amps. When no figure is shown discrimination is
not achieved.
