Siemens Building Technologies Security Solutions works
in close partnership from the initial consultation right through to
bespoke system design, installation and continuing maintenance, support
and a 24-hour emergency call out service. The result is a complete,
fully integrated security system that can encompass everything from
cost-effective modular solutions through to entire enterprise-wide
networked systems, combined with existing IT systems and controlled from
a single location. The first step in many security
systems begins with the provision of adequate perimeter protection.
Siemens offers a professional service on any aspect of perimeter defence
– cameras, site lighting, alarm systems, sterile zones, microwave and
infra red alarm protection, help points, customer information systems
and the improvement of inter-company communications.
Access control will effectively monitor and restrict the movements of
staff and visiting personnel and provide valuable management
information. Siemens provide a full range of card reading technologies
including ‘hands free’, proximity, biometric and smart cards.
Our systems control and restrict movement at gates, barriers and
turnstiles; they can link to fire and intruder alarms and monitor
environmental sensors for the control of heating, ventilation and
lighting.
The IT Challenge
Security technologies over recent years have embraced
and incorporated computing and network technologies. This has enabled
security systems to be far more flexible than in the past, moving the
system away from ‘closed circuit’ to ‘world wide’. Networking has seen
the convergence of many technologies and devices to take advantage of
flexible and cost effective data transmission.
Siemens IP cameras, video codecs and servers encode
video signals into IP video streams to transmit video over an IP
network. The video stream can then be recorded via an NVR or decoded
back into a composite signal so it can be displayed on a monitor or even
recorded into an analogue recorder.
Other network-enabled security systems include:
access control, where door controllers are networked reducing the
requirement for direct cabling; alarms contacts and relays that can be
linked to an IP camera or codec; and audio integrated into IP devices,
providing functions such as intercom and ‘talking CCTV’ systems.
Adopting IP technology need not mean discarding existing equipment.
Siemens can maximise an existing investment with hybrid solutions that
combine analogue and digital, wireless and cable, ISDN and broadband.
With the help of Siemens you can plan a security
system that utilises the latest technologies in the storage and
transmission of data and visual images. Distance between sites is no
longer a barrier to efficient transmission of security information.
Images and data can be stored, transmitted and shared using Local Area
and Wide Area Networks with seamless integration with IT services.
Managing Mass Storage of Data
An important area of CCTV systems is the management
of recorded video: compared to other network traffic, video has the
highest requirement. Video also has a high storage requirement:
typically 31 days of multiple cameras meaning several terabytes of
storage are used within a system. Siemens will advise on the best method
of high performance and high reliability storage to provide immediate
availability of data and recovery of lost data.
Secure Wireless Transmission
Siemens wireless networks are designed to provide a
cost-effective yet high-speed alternative to traditional leased lines
and can operate from building to building and even town to town.
Wireless Local Area and Wide Area Networks provide all the functionality
of wired networks with increased mobility for users. Installation is
relatively fast with no need to disrupt the fabric of the building or
dig up roads to lay cable. New advances in wireless technologies now
mean wireless connectivity can even be achieved with no line of sight.
This has led to the use of wireless solutions being a realistic
cost-effective alternative to leased lines.
Intelligent Security
To create a safer environment externally, Siemens
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems will monitor traffic
flow and provide secure parking. These systems read, record, log and
check 99% of all legal number plates against a database. If recognised
as significant or suspicious, the system can alert users to take the
appropriate action.
Facial recognition systems can automatically identify
or verify a person from a digital image or a video frame from a video
source, usually by comparing selected facial features from an image
against a facial database. These systems have limited applications and
operate best in a controlled access environment.
Siemens provides a range of intelligent video systems that offer the
opportunity to analyse real-time or recorded images. These systems
assist with people tracking, abandoned objects, perimeter surveillance,
personnel detection, suspicious behaviour and anomaly detection. As the
cost of video monitoring rises, video analysis is an efficient and
cost-effective tool to assist operators. Typical
examples include:
-
Congestion detection - when the density of people
or traffic reaches a certain level
-
Counter flow - looks for objects which move
‘against the flow’
-
Virtual tripwire - initiates alarm when something
‘breaks’ a line drawn in an image, useful for applications where
‘no-go areas’ exist & for safety applications
Quality Control & Standards
We believe strongly in Quality Assurance and each
system is assembled in-house and fully tested prior to delivery. This
ensures that any equipment failures occur in-house, and not on site.
Siemens operates to PSDB (Police Scientific Development Bureau)
guidelines; this involves setting clear objectives for every system and
regular evaluation of system performance. Our
nation-wide engineering teams support our installations throughout the
entire life of the system. Customers are offered a choice of tailored,
performance-related maintenance packages to suit a range of budgets.
