HVMS High Voltage Engineering Solutions
Specialist Services
HVMS was founded in 1988 to provide a complete, cost effective
service to users of high voltage distribution systems up to 132kV.
Since that time the services have expanded from straight forward
maintenance to complete turnkey power distribution packages.
Other services include protection studies, system design, installation
and commissioning of capital equipment plus substation and system
reinforcement. We also offer customers electrical system operation and
safety training courses — (Authorisation ‘AP and ‘SAP).
Many clients use us as independent consultants and specialist system
protection engineers for network co-ordination. Being a privately owned
independent company, we are often required to compile inspection
surveys, fault reports and project ‘snagging lists.
Fault Level & Discrimination Studies
When switches or relays malfunction under fault conditions the
consequences can be severe, ranging from damage to equipment and
probable plant shut down, to safety risks for personnel. Detailed design
and application of adequately rated fit for purpose equipment is
paramount in any electrical distribution network. HVMS have completed
numerous study reports, many highly complex and some prior and even
during very large construction and installation programmes.
The study incorporates three main sections, the first a data base
representative of the distribution system, secondly formatted schedules
of protection settings and blocking functionality of relays, and thirdly
a conclusion highlighting areas of concern with recommendations.
Don’t let it rest there, beyond the study, let us work with the M&E
contractor supervising relay setting/programming, final commissioning
and co-ordination of the complete electrical scheme.
Thermographic Inspections
Thermographic inspections should be a regular part of a predictive
maintenance programme. An indication of impending faults in mechanical
and electrical systems and components is an increased temperature due to
increased resistance and friction.
This temperature increase can be detected and quantified using the
latest thermal cameras. HVMS s state of the art thermal infrared cameras
operate in a similar way to a standard video camera and an image of the
temperature distribution of the component can be obtained. Should any
part of the component be significantly warmer than other similar parts,
a recording of the suspect component is taken. The magnitude of
temperature rise will be illustrated and the seriousness of the fault
can be determined.
Routine Maintenance & Inspection
Routine maintenance of high voltage plant should be carried out not
simply to ensure reliable and economical service, but to comply with the
provisions of the Health and Safety Executive.
In addition, all maintenance and inspection is carried out as
recommended by the equipment manufacturers and as required by BS
6626:1985 Code of Practice for Maintenance of Electrical Switchgear and
Control Gear. Such works are implemented in compliance with the
Electricity at Work Regulation 1989.
Only trained competent Authorised and Senior Authorised personnel are
utilised by HVMS. Our Engineers and Technicians are fully conversant
with all varieties of electrical equipment, not to mention the differing
handling, storing and disposal requirements.
HVMS strictly follow schedules of work and report on the condition of
plant before and after remedial treatment with recommendations for
future consideration. A comprehensive written report is issued to the
client upon completion of work.
Clients Training Course - Authorised / Senior Authorised Persons
A legal requirement of customers with their own distribution system
under the provisions of the Electricity at Work Regulation 1989 is the
appointment of trained competent staff. Our fully qualified instructors
can tailor courses precisely to clients needs. Two typical courses
include High Voltage Awareness and Authorisation for Work on High
Voltage Networks - Generating Plant Management and Workshop Practices.
We strongly recommend that Authorised/Senior Authorised Persons Courses
are held at the clients premises. This normally ensures that the network
design, equipment type, environment and duty is familiar.
