A World first: 2000 kVA of Uninterruptible Power from a Single Hitzinger NBDK
1/10 2000 Dynamic Diesel UPS System.
Hitzinger is an independent privately owned company founded in 1946 and has been
providing direct-coupled Diesel UPS systems supplying premium power to mission
critical processes for decades. Operating from over 30 worldwide locations, the
companys extensive experience in providing tailored turnkey power solutions
allows Hitzinger to deliver a comprehensive and effective power package to the
mission critical customer.
The
Hitzinger Dynamic Diesel UPS NBDK system comprises of four major components:
diesel engine, generator, kinetic energy storage module and coupling choke. The
kinetic energy module, generator and coupling choke work together to provide
power conditioning and ride through energy for the UPS system, whilst the diesel
engine provides the long-term back up for
a mains failure.
The input stabilising filter system and energy store ensure the critical load
receives a conditioned power supply whilst also providing power factor
correction to near unity and bidirectional harmonic filtration for the utility.
The NBDK System itself is not really new, it was well proven with world wide
installations with module ratings up to 1700 kVA but the new NBDK with 2000 kVA
is unique, because it is able to provide 2000 KVA of uninterrupted power as a
single unit either with a Cummins QSK 60 or a MTU 16 V 4000 Series engine with a
guaranteed uninterrupted supply tolerance of +/- 1%.
The development of the 2000kVA has been over a number of years culminating with
a M+W Zanders project for the TANSANIA National Bank that required 6 MVA of
uninterruptible power with N+1 resilience
Until now a requirement of 6000 kVA would need a minimum installation of 5
units, 4 to supply the load and a redundant module for additional resilience /
maintenance. This was always the limit for all the Diesel UPS manufacturers who
have maximum unit rating between 1670 and 1750 kVA.
With the 2MVA NBDK the client load can be met with the installation of 4 units,
3 to supply the load and a redundant module. This provides the client with
significant benefits including:
Reduced initial Capital Cost
DUPS system
Switch gear
Cabling
Real estate (Reduced Plant room Footprint)
Reduced operational costs
Reduced losses
Reduced maintenance
Increased resilience
These machines successful completed very demanding and stringent client
performance testing and have now been delivered.
This development has resulted in a further order for 6 units to provided 10 MVA
at 11kV of uninterruptible power with N+1 resilience to a STM Semi conductor
plant where previously they would have required 7 units.
In todays energy market with privatisation and the focus on shareholder return
the question of supply of power quality at the high energy range gets more and
more important to critical applications and these units provide secure
(uninterrupted) and clean high quality power with 100 % load power factor
correction independent from any grid disturbances.
As any consultant will tell you, there are a number of Key factors for
consideration for the installation of a UPS system:
Whole life cost
Service life.
Return on Investment
Compact size to maximize revenue from Technical space.
Consumer durable design.
Minimal requirement for cooling.
High reliability.
Ability to handle all loads.
For larger critical loads the Hitzinger NBDK 1/10 2000 2 MVA unit clearly sets
the benchmark in all these areas.
