GENT BY HONEYWELL NEWS RELEASE – GEPR019
Wessex Seminar Highlights Latest Fire Safety Reforms
With
new legislation on fire systems in commercial premises passed by the House of
Lords in June, Gent 24 Elite system Integrator Wessex Fire & Security says it
makes good sense to put the changes into practice now. The new laws will state
that owner/occupiers must carry out fire risk assessments to determine the level
of automatic fire protection provided in a building.
Director Stuart Fisher said: “The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order will
become law in April next year but it contains some really sensible
self-assessment practices which would be well worth employing immediately.”
So Shaftesbury-based Wessex has come up with some risk assessment guidelines in
conjunction with leading fire detection and alarm manufacturer, Gent by
Honeywell:
1. Identify Potential fire hazards:
Pinpoint combustibles, sources of heat, unsafe acts and unsafe conditions.
2. Identify location and people at risk:
Consider the effects for people sleeping on the premises, for anyone with a
disability, whether people can react quickly for themselves and whether people
are isolated.
3. Reduce the risks:
Remove, reduce, replace or segregate the hazard - and develop a prevention
culture among your staff
4. Evaluate the risks:
Categorise the risk as high, normal or low and determine whether your existing
fire arrangements are adequate or in need of improvement - including your alarm
system, a means of escape, correct signage and firefighting equipment.
5. Planning:
Review your findings and record the assessment, prepare an emergency plan, train
your staff, then monitor and review on a regular basis.
Stuart said: “When this all become law, each owner/occupier will have to appoint
one person to be responsible for all fire matters. In the event of a fire, if
that person could not prove that the fire system was installed and maintained
correctly, and that there were adequate extinguishers and means of escape, they
could be personally responsible to a court of law!”
“Basically, companies and organisations have to be aware that they are
responsible for ensuring their premises are protected - until now it has been
the responsibility of the Fire Service to review each building and advise on the
most suitable type of alarm system, but that will totally change.”
Under the new regulations, owner/occupiers should employ third party
certificated competent installation and maintenance companies like Wessex Fire &
Security that offer a genuine 24-hour callout service.
Wessex presented the facts about the new regulations to nearly 150 regional
representatives from the Fire Service, local authorities and companies from
around the south at a joint CPD seminar in Bournemouth, together with
manufacturer Gent by Honeywell.
For clarification on any aspects of the new regulations, property owners can
contact Mr Fisher on (01747) 852 258.
