Eaton electrical installation equipment is used throughout in the new Djanogly
City Academy building in Nottingham. The main switchboard is a Memform Form 4
cubicle switchboard; Memshield 2 MCCB panelboards and MCB distribution boards
provide sub-distribution and final distribution of power while Eaton’s MEM
lighting switches, socket-outlets and other wiring accessories form the consumer
interface.
Djanogly City Academy Nottingham is one of 200 independently-run academies which
the Government hopes to see established by 2010. The new site in Gregory
Boulevard, Nottingham will provide education for 810 year 7-9 (11-14 year-old)
pupils, with an emphasis on information and communications technology. With the
existing site in Sherwood Rise, the Academy will offer education for 1750
students, making it one of the largest schools in Nottinghamshire. The Academy
leads the way in laptop and wireless technology with extensive use of laptops
and tablet computers for 50% of curriculum time. Every pupil will have his/her
own laptop computer, so safe and reliable electrical installations are crucial.
NG Bailey & Co has carried out electrical and mechanical installation work under
a £2.8 million contract.
The main switchboard is a four-section Memform Form 4 cubicle switchboard with
Type 6 segregation. It was supplied as a type-tested factory built assembly from
Eaton’s Reddings Lane factory in Birmingham. It has a 1600A air circuit-breaker
incomer and 32 MCCB outgoing ways ranging from 32A SPN feeding fire alarm
equipment to 250A TPN units feeding seven panelboards. Other major loads include
ventilation and chiller plant. The switchboard includes 250kVAR de-tuned power
factor correction and 80kA transient voltage surge suppression, all supplied
from the Eaton range. There is also provision for active harmonic power
conditioning to be added, if necessary.
Four MCCB panelboards are located at load centres and supply 32 distribution
boards providing power and lighting in classrooms, laboratories, workshops, a
sports hall, offices and the kitchens. Three more panelboards feed mechanical
plant.
The final distribution boards incorporate RCBO protection on selected circuits.
They also provide contactor switching for corridor lighting and other key loads.
In all there are 44 Memshield 2 distribution boards throughout the building.
Eaton has also supplied wiring accessories throughout the building. This
includes lighting switches, socket-outlets and numerous key-operated emergency
lighting test switches. The majority of these are from the Intra range of white
moulded accessories or the Spectra grid switch system. Stainless steel twin
switch socket-outlets have been used in laboratories. All Eaton switch
socket-outlets have double-pole switching as standard and two or more earth
terminals for additional safety in IT environments. Eaton’s ability to supply a
total package from the main switchboard to wiring accessories is another major
strength.
Features of the NG Bailey contract include the use of chilled beams to supply
light and air circulation in the teaching areas. Wherever possible mechanical
ventilation is used to conserve energy. High frequency fluorescent lighting is
used in classrooms. Some 20% of the mechanical plant systems were pre-fabricated
off-site by Bailey Prefabrication. This and Eaton’s supply of factory-built
switchboards and panelboards helped reduce installation time and increase site
productivity on a seven-month M&E services contract.
Main contractor for Djanogly City Academy was SOL construction. Architect was
Foster & Partners and consultants were Buro Happold.
