Telling Lime Products
Unilit Natural Hydraulic Lime Products
A range of natural hydraulic lime mortars, renders, grouts and
decorative finishes combining characteristics of porosity, adhesion
and flexibility with modern day demands for consistency, traditional
‘non-synthetic’ effects and ease of application.
For refurbishment and new build a new K-Lime
range of mortars has been developed with Kilwaughter Lime. Blended
in Northern Ireland with selected limestone sands the K-Lime
products are competitively priced as mortars for building, render
and rough-cast, screeds, stone bedding and general plastering.
Characteristics
-
The replication of the qualities of historic
lime mortars assures compatibility with all natural mineral and
lime mortar backgrounds
-
Continuous working during the winter months
with limited protection required.
-
Resilience to flooding both in construction
and remedy
-
Mortars do not leech free lime deposits on to
the mortar face
-
Tolerance of damp and salts transfer during
setting without detriment to performance
-
Works are completed more quickly and
economically without specialist skills
-
Mortars never become harder than the
substrate to which they are applied
-
Moisture is extracted naturally and without
time limit from masonry backgrounds
-
When used with Foamglas® (66% recycled
cellular glass) our hydraulic render lime offers unsurpassed
qualities in impact resistance
-
Non combustiblity and waterproofing with
traditional ‘non-synthetic’ stucco finishes.
-
Lime bonding bridge coats ensure adhesion and
compatibility for façade upgrading, negating the need to hack
off sound renders.
-
Whilst harmful CO² emissions occur during the
production of both cement and lime, lime mortars are burnt at a
temperature of 900ºC and cement at >1450ºC. A study of the lime
cycle demonstrates that as much as 60% of CO² is retained during
the carbonation/setting process of natural hydraulic lime as is
released during the burning of limestone.
Applications
Natural hydraulic lime is suited for use in both
restoration and new build allowing construction without expansion
joints since lime mortars allow the structure to move as individual
elements rather than as a mass.
Unilit hydraulic lime products conform to the
European Standard ENV-4951, NHL 2 - 3.5 for natural hydraulic lime.
Description
Unilit hydraulic lime mortars are porous and
allow the background to breathe and stabilise. Lime mortars permit
natural movement of the façade to enable these to be traditionally
created without the requirement for movement joints. By the
selection of the sand grading and the mix proportions the mortar
strength is controlled to ensure compatability with the substrate.
Natural earth pigments are used to produce selected coloured mortars
for use with natural stone and brick. A comprehensive range of
mortars has been formulated to achieve particular requirements an
example being Unilit 30 which is suitable for salts containment
applications such as in cellars and against rising damp.
Building or masonry mortars are designed for new
build both in brick and stone. Unilit lime mortars are supplied in
variable forms, as a hydrate for blending with local sands,
pre-bagged or pre-blended with limestone sand of an appropriate
grade.
Unilit grouts and mortars are available for
stabilisation and consolidation work. Different formulations match
the physical and mechanical properties of the original construction.
Insulating Renders
Unilit 20 is a hydraulic lime blended with
perlite to provide a natural insulation mortar that eradicates
condensation and thermal shock. These characteristics are of
particular relevance for work on buildings of architectural or
historical importance as its light weight makes it ideal for
application in thicknesses from 15-100mm on weak substrates.
In new construction the demand for a rendered
insulated cladding system that is sustainable of source and made
from recycled materials led to a collaboration between PCE (UK) Ltd
and Telling Lime for Foamglas®, a 66% recycled cellular glass
insulation. Inert, stable, waterproof, non-combustible and highly
resistant to impact, the system is particularly suited to schools
and public buildings.
Lime Paints & Finishes
A comprehensive range of finishes is available in
a choice of textures and colours to maintain the compatibility and
porosity of the background. Finishes include the Corical range of
lime paints, Venetian polished plasters, simulated marble coatings,
granular aggregate finishes and roughcasts.
Hydraulic Lime Mortars, Floor Screeds, Concrete
& Bonding Layers
Unilit Natural Hydraulic Lime mortars, bedding
layers and lime concrete can be used in new construction,
conservation and restoration as general purpose and wearing screeds,
bedding and pointing mortars for stone and tiles. Natural hydraulic
lime allows the application of slabs and floor screeds without the
requirement for expansion or slip joints and will prevent
differential movement between the floor screed and the walls of lime
built structures. Application without a DPM will allow the floor to
"breathe" with moisture from beneath the screed being evacuated as a
vapour. The control of moisture build up below the screed prevents
salt laden vapours from being diverted in to the existing walls.
Where stone, paving or tiles are then to be laid over the screed the
use of a Unilit bedding mortar will ensure the performance of the
screed is maintained and the compatibility of the mortar with the
stone. Application of lime screeds in conjunction with underfloor
heating is popular to achieve improved stability, an open pore
structure and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. Unilit mortars
prevent the build up of moisture within the floor and remove the
risk of thermal bridging and movement. An enhanced storage of heat
is achieved in comparison with cementitious screeds.
