Insulation Sustainable Thermal Insulation Stonewool Insulation
Rockwool expands UK production to meet growing demand for its
non-combustible, ecologically sound insulation.
Spinning high performance, non-combustible insulation from strands
of molten volcanic rock sounds like the stuff of science fiction but
the success of this enterprise has seen Rockwool emerge as the
world’s leading provider of stonewool insulation.
In the UK, Rockwool currently produces this high grade insulation
from a state of the art plant in Bridgend by smelting igneous
Diabase rock, and spinning fibres from the molten ore to create a
wide range of insulation materials, ranging from loft insulation
rolls to impact-resistant roofing boards. It is also bonded to
produce high performance panels.
The resulting high grade insulation in not only extremely energy
efficient, it also achieves A1 Euroclass fire rating (which means it
is non-combustible and will not contribute to the spread of fire)
and provides excellent noise insulation with its high density fibre
construction absorbing sound in and around buildings.
Sustainable Thermal Insualtion - Stonewool Insulation
And, building on its heat insulation, fire and sound absorption
qualities, Rockwool has also emerged as a potential solution to the
new environmental guidelines, because it is completely recyclable
and reusable.
Old Rockwool insulation can be stripped out of buildings undergoing
demolition or refurbishment and either re-used or sent back to
Rockwool where it can be melted down in the furnace and re-spun to
make new insulation.
Indeed all new Rockwool insulation now contains around 56% by volume
of recycled product. And the source of new Rockwool product is also
highly sustainable, with the Diabase rock from which Rockwool is
made being produced through volcanic activity at an annual rate
38,000 times greater than Rockwool extracts it.
The stonewool insulation is also made without any gas or blowing
agents, with the insulation properties being provided by trapped air
within the mineral wool particles which means the thermal
performance of Rockwool is not dependant upon ozone depleting gases.
In addition, because Rockwool’s thermal properties are integral to
the structure of the material, the thermal performance does not
degrade over time and it will stay in situ throughout the life of
the building.
As new environmental legislation continues to be introduced, such as
Part L and energy efficiency legislation including the EU Energy
Performance of Buildings Directive, the recyclablability of
insulation will increasingly be seen as critical, especially as
landfilling this waste is no longer an option.
Rockwool Insulation - Investing in the Future
The success of Rockwool’s four-in-one solution (providing insulation
materials that combine fire, thermal and acoustic insulation with
strong environmental performance) continues to drive demand for the
product, even in the current economic climate.
As a result, Rockwool is significantly increasing UK production and
it is finalising construction work on a third production line at its
Bridgend factory, which will see UK manufacturing capacity doubling
to 200,000 tonnes a year from the Spring of 2009.
In addition further investment in 2009 will see a new recycling
facility open at Bridgend to process the growing volume of
end-of-life Rockwool insulation products being sent back for
re-smelting.
Rockwool has also invested in expanding its technical and design
departments which offer architects across the UK advice on
specifying appropriate Rockwool products for their buildings. The
team also provides technical guidance on thermal, fire and acoustic
performance and can provide design calculations to help identify the
correct insulation solutions for each building.
Combined, the investment in services and manufacturing and recycling
plants will enable Rockwool to continue to capitalise on the growing
demand for its products and to provide a wide range of sustainable
insulation solutions to the UK’s architects and property development
industry for years to come.
