Windcatcher Natural Ventilation Systems
Monodraught Windcatcher systems encapsulate any
prevailing wind and carry that wind force down into the room below
to provide a constant supply of fresh air for natural ventilation.
The system is divided internally into four quadrants so that the
leeward side of the system acts as a passive stack for removing
stale air from the building. Volume control dampers within the
system, control the correct rate of ventilation, according to the
building requirements. No matter which way the wind blows, one face
of the Windcatcher system that will always act as air intake. The
Monodraught Windcatcher systems eliminate the need for air
conditioning during summer months and provides all the benefits of
free night cooling without compromising the security of the
building, since the dampers open fully at night to allow the cool
night air to purge the building of stale air and they automatically
close again in the morning at a preset time.
Suncatcher Systems
The Monodraught sun pipe Suncatcher system
provides controlled natural ventilation by utilising the Monodraught
Windcatcher method and this is combined with the Monodraught Sunpipe
natural daylight system. As with the Windcatcher arrangement, the
prevailing wind pressure carries a continuous fresh air supply,
through weather protected louvres, down into the room below,
slightly pressurising the internal space. Warm stale air is expelled
from the room by the principle of differential temperatures and
natural buoyancy of air movement on the opposite side or leeward
side of the system.
The heart of this Suncatcher system is the
mirror-finish aluminium Sunpipe tube which reflects and intensifies
natural daylight down into the room below.
Sunpipe Systems
Monodraught Sunpipes consist of silverised,
mirror-finish aluminium tubes that carry sunlight down into the room
below. There is virtually no limit to the length of Sunpipe or the
number of bends that can be used and the Sunpipe system terminates
in the patented Monodraught Sunpipe Diamond dome, which seals the
pipe against the ingress of rain, dust or insects. A special ceiling
diffuser seals the bottom entry of the Sunpipe at ceiling level
creating a long column of still air, which acts as an excellent
insulator against heat transfer. Accordingly, there is virtually no
heat loss in winter months nor solar gain during summer months.
Monodraught manufacture a range of 10 different sizes from 230mm to
1000mm diameter and Monodraught’s Design Team provides a full design
service. A full installation service is also provided across the UK.
Solar-powered Systems
With the ever-increasing threat of global warming
and rising energy prices, Monodraught decided to incorporate solar
power into their Natural Ventilation systems wherever possible. This
has resulted in three products; Sola-vent, Sola-boost and Sola-extract.
Sola-boost provides additional ventilation under sun power during
summer months and can increase the throughput of ventilation air by
the system. Sola-vent is the solar powered bathroom extract vent,
which also incorporates the Sunpipe for energy-free operation and
Sola-extract is used in conjunction with cross flow ventilation,
typically from openable windows, to provide powered extract
ventilation – but without any electrical power. Sola-boost systems
are available in either circular or square format and are
manufactured in a wide range of sizes to suit every application.
Cool-phase (Passive Cooling & Heat Recovery)
The Cool-phase system is an intelligent passive
cooling and heat recovery system utilising Phase Change Material (PCM)
to provide high “potential” thermal mass and the ability to release
the thermal storage highly effectively.
Collaborating with the University of Nottingham,
Ciba UK PLC and the Carbon Trust, Monodraught has created an
extremely low energy, fresh air ventilation system. Cool-phase is
also capable of providing both cooling and heat recovery at a
fraction of the power usually associated with conventional air
conditioning.
Special Shapes & Finishes
There is virtually no limit to the style and
design of all the Monodraught system range to complement any
building design. The most popular shapes are square, round, and
rectangular, but oval or other shapes can be produced. The standard
material for Windcatchers is glass fibre but Sunpipe lengths are
manufactured from aluminium, with the remaining elements
manufactured in polycarbonate and ABS.
