Underfloor Heating Cooling - Under Floor Heating / Cooling
The Giacomini brand is perhaps best known in the UK for its range of radiator valves and plumbing fittings. These have been the staple diet of plumbing and heating engineers since 1951.
Alongside this we have been developing more sophisticated products and services. For the last 10 years we have been building a powerful reputation within the under-floor heating industry, not only in the supply and manufacture of all the components required, but also in the design, installation and screeding of under-floor heating systems, giving a single point of liability and offering up to 50 year guarantees.
The more we consider environmental sensitivity, the more we need to review the whole process of heating buildings with the minimum drain on fuel resources, whether of biomass or mineral origin. Flexibility of design is essential in this area and one of the most efficient and increasingly popular solutions lies right under our feet - under-floor heating.
Once in place, under-floor heating / cooling provides many advantages over convection and hot air systems. Because heating is by natural radiation and the heated surface is uniform across the whole floor, there is very little air movement and the running temperature can be 30ºC-35ºC less than convector systems. Apart from the economy this brings, this reduces to a minimum the disturbance and distribution of airborne dust and bacteria, leading to a cleaner, healthier interior atmosphere.
Most importantly, the required heat source output is reduced so that less powerful units may be used. This allows a significant reduction in the carbon footprint, especially when linked to biomass or solar heat generation.
By careful design, under-floor heating / cooling can be installed as a lifetime economy measure that fulfils all of the considerations surrounding the needs of a company’s personnel, reduces running costs and impact on the global environment.
In terms of interior design, the wide clear spaces afforded by under-floor heating allow creation of the most effective layout, even when use is changed during a building’s lifetime. With no intrusive convectors, maximum use of both wall and floor space is possible.
From a technical standpoint, there are several advantages at the time of installation. The number of individual jointing components is far less than for conventional wet systems, as the major heat exchanging elements are continuous loops of tube (usually PEX or PB) laid in carefully designed patterns and connected to an above-floor distribution manifold. This saves time and disruption to other works, with even large floor areas often being completed very quickly – including the laying of the floor screed.
It is the combination of low running cost and flexibility in design that makes under-floor heating such an attractive proposition. Economy, ease of installation and minimum impact on the environment - under-floor heating is today’s answer for modern building heating / cooling design.
