Introduction to Underfloor Heating
Underfloor Heating (UFH), already the most popular form of heating in
Europe, is a growing trend in the UK. UFH emits radiant heat and is more
efficient than radiators, maintenance costs are lower than traditional
systems, and not only are rooms more aesthetically appealing UFH is
sustainable and could increase the value of your property.
Genius in 5 ‘Wet’ Systems
Options for Screeded Floors - For installation on a solid floor slab.
1
Staples
The OSMA UFH basic entry level system. It gives you full layout
flexibility: You decide the pipe spacing and choice of insulation. It’s
especially suitable for small and irregularly shaped floor areas. You
will need to allow longer for installation of this system than for
System Plates or Pocketed Polystyrene.
2
System Plates
A cleverly designed method for fast placement of UFH pipe but which
still gives you full layout flexibility. You decide the pipe spacing and
choice of insulation. Vacuum-formed interlocking sheets have integral
grips to hold pipe in place. This makes it easy for you to include
diagonals and make secure turns in the pipe route. A faster system to
install compared with Staples.
3
Pocketed Polystyrene
A real time saving option because it enables you to fit insulation and
the base for the UFH pipe simultaneously. Insulation panels have
machined channels and screed pockets to grip the pipe. This means the
pipe spacing is already set for you at consistent centres. Special end
panels hold the pipe turns and insulate the Flow and Return pipe runs
for each circuit. Altogether a faster option to install than both
Staples and System Plates.
Options for Timber Floors
For suspended floor constructions and fully floating floors.
4
Foiled Polystyrene
Insulation panels with factory fitted aluminium foil diffusers for
machined channels that hold the pipe in place. Versions for joisted,
battened or fully floating floors available.
5
Modular Chipboard
Tongued-and-grooved chipboard panels with pre-fitted UFH pipe. Enables
simultaneous installation of floor deck and UFH over joisted or battened
floor.
Also coming soon - OSMA Electric Underfloor Heating
Electric cable mat system ideal for both renovation and new build
extension projects. 100W / M² suitable for all subfloors, 150W / M²
suitable only for solid subfloors.
Typical Controls & Balancing
Thermostats
May include units for:
- Network (programmable) control
- Individual room/zone control
Unit options: 12V, or 230V mains - Ensure all thermostats are:
- Out of direct sunlight
- Away from heat sources
- Exposed to control area (e.g. NOT in cupboard)
- Approx 1.5m above floor level
SAFETY NOTE: Any installations requiring wiring connection to mains
supply should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
Single Zone Control
Water mixing unit, linked to room thermostat, to control flow
temperature into a single circuit.
- Connect to primary circuit or existing radiator branch
Multi-zone Control
Via wiring centres, linked to programmable and remote thermostats:
- (12V) UH-1 Control Centre
- (230V) UH1-M Control Centre
May include integrated control connections to radiators, towel rail
and domestic hot water.
WIRING DIAGRAMS for UH-1 and UH1-M are available on request.
For 12V system, suitable cable is required for network accessories (e.g.
OSMA Master Touchpad control unit) to allow for data transfer.
Cable recommendations:
- For up to 30m runs: Cat 5e
- For up to 100m runs: Belden 9538
1 Start Up
Do NOT start pump until system completely full of water.
- Ensure water from boiler to manifold is above the required UFH
flow water temperature
- Open mixing valve for required flow water temperature (see chart
in pack) - e.g. 5 = 53°C
2 Check Flow Temperature
- Check flow temperature strip on flow (lower) arm of manifold:
Adjust by using mixing valve (max. 60ºC for screeded floors)
3 Set Valves
- Note pipe length of each circuit - and then locate valve setting
chart (included with manifold assembly pack)
- Start with longest circuit: use small straight-blade screwdriver
to turn Return valve cone gently clockwise until fully closed - then
open it 2 full turns
- To set other Return valves, read down relevant column of chart
for longest circuit
- Number of turns from closed is shown, according to length of
each circuit
- When all Return valves set, system is balanced. Fit the bases
and attach the Actuators.
Typical Layouts
Your project may not precisely match any of these examples, but they
can help you plan your pipe layout for a UFH installation:
Basic Square
Conservatory
L Shaped
Irregular Shape - To avoid major fittings: this could be for a kitchen
or bathroom.
Serpentine Pattern - Is recommended for staples installations. Pocketed
Polystyrene & Foiled Polystyrene machined channels also use this
pattern.
