Stainless Steel Construction Fixings in Cavity Walls
Stainless steel is used within cavity walls for both restraint and
support fixings. There are many grades of stainless steel, but in most
cases one of two grades will be suitable.
Grade 1.4301 (304) Provides excellent all-round corrosion resistance for
most wall ties and supports within a cavity wall.
Grade 1.4401 (316) Used in highly corrosive areas or where the stainless
steel is employed externally as a feature. In this case a polished
finish will normally be applied.
Wall Ties & Restraints
BS5628-1 provides recommendations on wall tie length, embedment,
density and positioning. Ties are classified by type.

*Part E Type A Tie. Suitable for separating / party walls.
In addition to the standard range of wall ties, bespoke ties can be
specified from the reference system shown below: eg. SD21

Masonry Reinforcement
Ancon AMR masonry reinforcement is designed to be located in the
horizontal bed joint to improve the structural performance of a wall. It
is available in stainless and galvanised steel in four standard widths
(60, 100, 150 & 175mm) and three wire diameters (3, 4 & 5mm - equivalent
dia after flattening). Longitudinal wires are flattened to a profile of
less than 3mm.

Masonry Support
Buildings taller than 12 metres or 4 storeys will usually require the
outer leaf of masonry to be supported at intervals of not more than 9
metres or 3 storeys, whichever is less. The expansion of clay brickwork
of up to 1mm per metre will normally limit the practical maximum height
to less than 6 metres unless large expansion joints are acceptable under
the support.
AnconOptima – A standard masonry support system comprising a two-step
angle and interchangeable brackets to suit cavities from 60mm to 130mm.
Systems are available to support a load of up to 14kN/max height of 7m
and brackets are simply changed on site to allow for cavity variations.
Systems are specified by using simple load/cavity charts.
AnconOptima 10 - Max Load 10 kN/m (5m high)
AnconOptima 12 - Max Load 12 kN/m (6m high)
AnconOptima 14 - Max Load 14 kN/m (7m high)

Ancon MDC Bracket Angle Support – A continuous angle with a series of
brackets welded to the back. The Ancon MDC system is designed for
individual applications. It is suitable for cavities from 50mm to more
than 150mm and is manufactured in a variety of types and sizes to suit
architectural details.

The Ancon MDC support system can be specified as:-
MDC/type/cavity/load e.g.
MDC 75/5.6 – Standard MDC to suit a 75mm cavity & a load of 5.6kN/m.
MDC/R 125/7.2 - MDC with reversed angle to suit a 125mm cavity & a load
of 7.2kN/m.
Ancon Individual Brackets – provide great flexibility in design. They
are ideal for the support of brickwork curved on plan, suspended soldier
courses & arches.
Tension Bar Systems
Ancon Tension Systems are available in both carbon steel and
stainless steel in a variety of sizes and finishes. In addition to bars
and fork connectors, the systems include couplers and anchor discs.
